A very interesting article posted by TheManufacturer.com about calls for the government to provide SME’s with investment in R&D.
Dyson, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce have joined forces to call on the Government to increase efforts to provide SMEs with more incentives to innovate.
CEO of the Wiltshire-based manufacturer, James Dyson, called on the Coalition to step up its efforts to give companies more support by investing in innovation and R&D. He also asked for a bigger focus on industrial education in schools to try and generate interest in manufacturing and engineering earlier on in young people’s lives.
As well as Dyson, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce both warned the Government that British manufacturing would suffer if it did not invest more in R&D and education. The chief executive of Rolls-Royce, John Rishton, raised concerns about the education system, saying that producing enough qualified engineers and technicians for industry remained a long-term issue.
Dyson’s remarks came after reporting an 8% increase in profits to £206m last year, after revenues rose 15% to £770m. Speaking to The Guardian, chief executive Martin McCourt said: “We just need to offer some relief, better tax credits, and give companies some kind of incentive. That’s the key to keeping manufacturing businesses successful on the world stage.”
Dyson is famous for the number of products that are sold in countries outside of the UK – around 80%. Although all Dyson products are manufactured in South East Asia, the R&D Centre in Malmesbury, Wiltshire employs 550 people. The company spends a relatively large amount on R&D – last year it spent £45m.
On the subject of skills, McCourt was very clear that as a company, Dyson believed the Government’s approach to increasing the number of skilled engineers in the UK needs to focus on schools.

Joanne Malin of BBC WM celebrates manufacturers across the West Midlands in her Midlands Made segment and invited Grayson Thermal Systems to take part.
The ‘Midlands Made’ segment features during the Tuesday episode of “Mornings with Joanne Malin” on BBC Radio WM. In the segment Joanne visits West Midlands manufacturers and gets their opinion on current issues affecting manufacturers today and manufacturing in general which is part of the region’s rich history.
Joanne recently visited Grayson Thermal Systems at its joint Headquarters and Aluminium Technology Centre to speak to Founder and Chairman Graham Hateley who started the business over 30 years ago. The two talked about growing material costs, export and employment, all increasing concerns within the UK.
Joanne is in a long line of VIP’s that have visited Grayson’s main manufacturing facility. Other visitors include Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne and Chinese Ambassador to Britain, His Excellency Liu Xiaoming.
After visiting the site, Joanne commented: “I was honored to be invited to come and visit Grayson as part of the Midlands Made segment. It is great to see a successful British company come out of Birmingham and I am happy to support them through their business endeavours.”br /br /a href=http://graysonts.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/20110323-035407.jpgimg src=http://graysonts.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/20110323-035407.jpg alt=20110323-035407.jpg class=alignnone size-full //a

Grayson Thermal Systems have entered a team into “The Ridge Walk Challenge” which is in aid of Sense, the charity for deafblind people. Last year the walk raised over £100,000 for the charity and this year Grayson want to do our bit to add to that remarkable total.
The ‘Grayson Gems’, will walk 26 miles starting at midnight, in 12 hours through the Ridgeway National Trail. We need to raise at least £1600.

Firstly, Happy New Year! We hope you have all had a wonderful holiday break.
We’ve come back to work in the midst of a very unhappy country. The new year has brought an increase in VAT and fuel duty, which have both severely affected the motoring industry. Below is an article written in the Birmingham Post on Monday about how these rises will affect Birmingham commuters.
Commuters heading back to work tomorrow must dig deeper into their pockets after bus and rail fare increases came into force.
Bus firm National Express joined train companies in hiking prices yesterday.
Passengers must now pay £1.60 for a short-hop bus ticket – up 40p from last January. And rail fares went up by an average of more than six per cent.
London Midland, which operates services between New Street and Euston, imposed a 5.8 per cent rise on season tickets and Chiltern, which runs trains between Snow Hill and Marylebone, put up prices by an average of 5.7 per cent.
Virgin Trains imposed six per cent increases on tickets bought on the day of travel for use on any train.
The Campaign for Better Transport said the rises were “holding travellers to ransom”.
But National Express chief executive Dean Finch said the bus fare rises were needed to help meet the £25 million cost of buying 120 new buses for the region.
And the chief executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, Michael Roberts, said the rises were part of Government policy to make rail passengers pay a greater share of the cost than taxpayers.
