Quality Certification for Matco Engineering

Birmingham-based machined parts specialist Matco Engineering has secured ISO 9001:2008 certification, a step which director Matt Bishop says will help it to sustain its recent growth. The business, which was set up in 2008, has diversified into a number of new markets and the certification is helping to speed up the process of tendering for new work by providing evidence of the robustness of Matco’s processes.

Matt said: “Although my background is in the automotive sector Matco is now working across a growing number of industries, including food, sustainable energy and medical equipment.

“We moved to larger premises earlier this year and have added on a night shift in response to the growth in orders. Many of those new customers have conducted their own audits of our systems, but having the ISO 9001 certification means fewer will need to do so in the future, and we can shorten the lead time between enquiry and order fulfilment.”

This ability to be responsive is a key aspect of Matco’s service. The business was set up to provide high quality parts within a guaranteed timeframe when necessary, a level of service that had previously only been available to the very largest buyers of machined parts. Matco has recently recruited a new addition to its sales team, and has reported a 20 per cent increase in turnover for the last quarter, compared with the same period last year.

Subcon Success for Matco

Subcon 2010 was a big success for machined parts specialist Matco Engineering, with good levels of enquiries and three potential new jobs going straight to quotation stage.

Matco director Matt Bishop says that a combination of a prime position and the close proximity of other related shows (such as MACH, Drives & Controls and Electrex), helped to drive a steady stream of good quality visitors to the company’s stand, to find out about the latest developments within the business.

Matco, which moved to larger, 5,000 sq.ft. premises earlier this year, serves a wide variety of customers, predominantly in the automotive supply chain and the rail industry, and is increasingly diversifying into other engineering sectors.

Matt said: “We had a good year at the Show last year but 2010 has been even better.

“Manufacturing companies are still finding things tough, and they are looking for suppliers who can help them to work harder and smarter. Matco was set up to support low and medium volume manufacturers and, at Subcon, we found that our offer was just what people were looking for.”

Matco specialises in offering high-end service and quality levels to low and medium volume manufacturers, and provides a turnkey solution, from sourcing the raw material, through machining, processing, assembly and test to guaranteed on-time delivery.
